Seastar,

I have Song School Latin - we use it, it is a fine program. It isn't gong to get you very far however, You have to ask what is your ultimate goal for Latin? We use Evan Millner's products https://sites.google.com/site/janualinguae/. It is much better and has tons more material than when we first started using the site 6 years ago. My 17 y/o can speak Latin fluently. That is what I wanted. He does not need to do translation - he just reads it. I am not that good.

We are in the process of creating a full Latin curriculum using Little Reader. I'd been waiting for v3 to come out so I could start. We are starting with  - The Orbis Sensualium Pictus. That is free online - I think Evan's reading of it is $1.99. the first thing I am doing is putting all vocabulary in that fits with the LR format. Then I'll create files that will tie it all together. From there we'll move to either Dooge or Alder. My oldest did both.

We also used a couple other programs before I found Latinum - but Evan picked out the best resources for getting as close to Latin Immersion as possible. He also has a free video course on youtube that you can use to teach yourself . A book I have used alot in the beginning was Demystifying Latin. But Evan has so many materials and they are so cheap and thorough that you don't really need it.

Latinum's goal is to provide you with the tools to become a fluent reader of Latin, with reasonable speaking ability as a pleasant side effect of the method.

More about learning using these tools.

D'Ooge - Latin for Beginners - A Complete Audio Course 2009
13 hours 11 minutes of audio
Now, for the first time, the entire textbook is available in audio, as a complete stand-alone audio course.

This  traditional Latin textbook, dating from the very early 20th Century, was produced in audio in November 2009. Many students still enjoy using it, and it is popular with people studying Latin at home. My view is that it is useful to use a variety of textbooks; not every author explains every point the same way. Also, reading or listening to a variety of explanations of the same points is good, and increases the chance of learning the material thoroughly. D'Ooge uses more formal grammatical terminology than either Underwood or Adler. His method is known as 'grammar-translation'. This audio course adds a third dimension to his textbook, turning it into a comprehensible input source as well. D'Ooge's textbook also comes with a mini Latin reader with a graded selection of prose in basic Latin.

Millner's Serial and Oral Latin Course is finally in production.

I am publishing this new intensive Latin course as an audio-only course.

This audio course by Evan der Millner is stand-alone. The serial and oral course progresses steadily.

Right from the beginning you will start to learn and consolidate your Latin. You will learn through listening and speaking. The steps are always gradual. There are no sudden leaps. The examples are numerous, and the amount of Latin you will listen to, produce and understand will be enormous.

METHOD
Every new item introduced comprises a single step. The step is a self-contained mini-lesson, short enough for a coffee break. Some steps contain two new vocabulary items ( often a new adjective and noun), or a point of grammar. Each grammar point is clearly explained.

Also included are colloquia (scripted conversations), short text excerpts covering a wide range of subject matter, fables, and other material to keep up your interest as the course progresses. You will also be taught the skill set needed to analyse texts grammatically using Latin.

Each step (mini-lesson) has its own mp3 file.

If you are the type who thinks they 'cannot learn a language' as complex as Latin, you will find with this course that you certainly will be able to gain command of the language.

Step 51 - 100 pdf files

Step 101 - 150 audio files

Step 101 - 150 pdf files

Underwood - Latin for Beginners, aimed at pharmaceutical and medical students. 2009

Latinum's issue in audio in November 2009 of Underwood's course in  Latin for Medical Students is a unique offering. Underwood wrote his course for medical students taking the Latin examinations at London's Guild of Apothecaries and the Royal College of Physicians in the early 1800's. These students, as non-Latin specialists, required a  common-sense approach. The result is a very accessible beginner's Latin course. It would also be useful as a revision course for the more seasoned student, as it approaches the subject from a fresh angle.  I am very fond of this course - it is very well constructed - traditional in its approach, but, Underwood has a rare knack for being able to explain matters with great clarity.

LATIN BEGINNER AUDIOBOOKS and VOCABULARY BUILDING (GOLD)

Fenton's 'A Child's First Latin Book' - Religious and Old Testament Themes 2012

Fenton's reader is in the style promoted by the philosopher John Locke, and the printers to University College, London (John Taylor). The Latin is presented grammatically in a word order that approximates the English, making translation into English easier for the complete beginner. This audiobook deals with sacred texts from the Old Testament.  The reading is Latin-English-Latin, and repeated again in Latin only.

The Latin in this reader is simple, and this is one of the most suitable readers I have come across for a beginner wanting to read some extended text in Latin.

Comenius' 'Vestibulum to the Latin Language'.  2011
2 hours 51 minutes of audio
Who was Comenius and why is he important?

This text is a pleasant introduction to the Latin language, and would also benefit more experienced students, who may have a very limited range of vocabulary.
The Vestibulum gives an essential foundation in the core root words of Latin, enough to begin to start to speak about some things, and to read a variety of very simple texts. The Romans themselves used simple dialogues and fables to teach their children, or foreigners ( we have textbooks from the second century for teaching Latin to Greeks) - so throwing out this model, an eminently sensible one of slowly increasing complexity of the texts, aiming at fluency in 5 to 6 years - has lead to an antire generation being unable to read Latin without translating it into the vernacular in their heads, and poorly equipped to express themselves in the language. Comenius' Vestibulum imitates these ancient Roman educational texts, as do his grammar texts, which are written in a pleasant , clear and light-hearted Latin style.
The Vestibulum contains a vocabulary of 1000 root words.

Comenius - Orbis Sensualium Pictus 2011
John Amos Comenius composed his "Orbis Sensualium Pictus" (The Visible World in Pictures) as a first primer and introductory schoolbook. He believed the teacher should use visual aids, and, where possible, actual physical models. The curriculum should be wide ranging, and cover all the main areas of everyday life as it was experienced by his students. He does not sanitize the harshness of the world. Thus all the items mentioned in the text are referenced with numbers to engravings, that are positioned alongside the text.  His young students would find out about the world, and all the main ideas that people had about it, in a simplified form - astronomy, climatology, zoology, botany, human anatomy, philosophy, geography, geometry, musical instruments, warfare, politics, jurisprudence -a student studying this book will accomplish two things - they will build up a vocabulary of a few thousand Latin words, acquire a knowledge of simple grammatical structures ( the sentences are all relatively simple) and in addition, gain an insight into the world, as it was understood by a Protestant Renaissance scholar in the mid 1600's. The Orbis Pictus is recorded carefully in restored Classical Pronunciation, chapter by chapter,in Latin-English-Latin. A Latin only version is also available. This text, despite its advanced age, is still suitable for use by young students.

Millner -  Imaginum Vocabularium Latinum - A Latin Picture Dictionary 2009
The Imaginum Vocabularium Latinum was originally created in 2007 for Molendinarius' personal use - it is an illustrated vocabulary of over 3300 items, and has its core source  a nineteenth century word list covering a selection of topics. This has been supplemented with more modern material drawn from a variety of lexical sources. The included image files cover the following topics: army, birds, boats, the body , buildings, clothes, Comenius (illustrated phrases from the Orbis Sensualium Pictus), containers, education, entertainments, fabrics, farming, foods, fruits, furniture, geography, geology, insects, law, mammals, marine life, measurements, money, plants, religion, reptiles, science, society, speech, sport, time, tools, tradesmen, vehicles, verbs, weather. (These image files include labelled photos of all body parts - so, please look over this material before use with a young student. You can easily delete or move an image elsewhere, or create subcategories, once you have downloaded them). Turn them into a slideshow as a fun way to learn vocabulary.

Coleridge - Pretty Lessons in Verse (Latin Vocabulary Building) 2009

55 minutes of audio

Sara Coleridge, sister of the celebrated poet, wrote a lovely collection of poems for teaching Latin, addressed to dear Henry and Edith, her children. I suppose her brother had a hand in these
delightful verses as well, which make learning a foundational Latin vocabulary a little bit easier.  Read as an audiobook by Molendinarius.

Ripman - Classified Vocabulary - Swallowing the Dictionary 2009
Over 100 years ago, Walter Ripman, in his 'Handbook of the Latin Language', organized Latin vocabulary into domains and subdomains. The noted New Testament scholar I. Howard Marshall, himself a student of Latin, claims that Ripman's reference was "an extremely useful way of organizing the material for a student learning Latin vocabulary."

This DVD has 50 semantic fields, with sub-fields. It closely follows the pioneering work of Ripman. Each word is read in English and Latin, so correct quantity is learned naturally. Tens of thousands of words are presented - this DVD is intended to be listened to multiple times - initially this will be quite tiring, if not bewildering - however, this system will help to build your vocabulary rapidly, and, if refreshed on a monthly basis, the words you have learned will become consolidated, and new words and idiomatic expressions will become engraved in your mind with each subsequent iteration. Now available in audio from Latinum.

The digital download includes some additional experimental revision audio files in Latin only - you might want to put these in a separate folder after download. depending on user feedback, I will provide more of these in future releases of this item.

LATIN LOWER INTERMEDIATE AUDIOBOOKS and VOCABULARY (PURPLE)

Corderius - Colloquia Selecta - Scripted Conversations for Learning Spoken Latin. 2009

These scripted dialogues were first issued in the 1500's, and immediately became a hit - they went through a large number of editions, and were a staple of the Latin schoolroom right through to the late 1700's. A study made of the bookshelves of students who died while in college at Cambridge University ( whose possessions were recorded in the records), shows that these dialogues, and works by Erasmus, were in almost every student's personal library in the early - mid 1700's.

They only lost popularity when the rise of Nationalism and regionalism in Europe lead to less emphasis being placed on oral fluency in Latin, eventually leading to the situation today, when, for the first time since the fall of Rome, Latin as a spoken medium is in danger of extinction. The recording also contains the Latin-only version, in two audio variations, the Willymott and Alexander editions.

Maxey's  'Cornelia' - A Story in Simple Latin, suitable for beginners.  2012
2 hours 23 minutes of audio

This novella is written in simple Latin, and would be suitable for an intermediate student. It is set in America. The vocabulary and general subject matter appears to be setting up a structure for reading Caesar - however, the story stands on its own merits.

The language progresses in difficulty as the course progresses. This is a companion text to Maxey's 'Latin Primer'.

Maxey's 'New Latin Primer'  2012

This easy text is a reading book, suitable for an intermediate student of Latin.

Recorded in 2012 by Molendinarius in restored classical pronunciation. This recording contains just over 2 hours of audio. Each short chapter has its own audio file.
This is a relatively easy read, beginning with very simple Latin. The stories and themes in this book run in step with those found in Maxey's 'Cornelia' .

This book contains more about Roman life, with a particular focus on war and things military. It is rare to find a Latin reader such as this, that does not advance too rapidly. Even a more advanced student will derive much benefit from an easy read such as this.

Missa Sancta (Read in Restored Classical Pronunciation) 2012

Student edition recorded in Latin-English-Latin, phrase by phrase, with a separate repetition in Latin only.
This is a text dating from 1755, and is an academic study text.

The Missa Sancta in its various forms can be regarded as an important document in the history of Western Civilization, and many phrases and expressions from it are very common in Latin literature.

An acquaintance with this text is worth having, especially given its prevalence in the Western musical tradition.

Chickering - 'A First Latin Reader' ( Roman History Reader) 2009

Comenius (after)  -  Der Kleine Lateiner - A Latin Reader 2010

Der Kleine Lateiner is essentially a re-write of Comenian material, with much in common with the Orbis Pictus. It is a useful text to use to revise and consolidate the Orbis Sensualium Pictus, as the wording is often slightly different, but the subject matter will be familiar.

Nutting - American History Reader 2009

Nutting's "De America" - A Latin Reader. This interesting series of historical stories ( broken into 100 episodes) is composed in relatively simple Latin. It chronicles the period from Christopher Columbus until the founding of the American Republic.

Conceived of as a reader introductory to Caesar, the series focuses on  the period of discovery, and then on battles between the settlers and the Native Americans, and between the American colonists and the British, interspersed with individual tales of the trials of life during this interesting period of history. Occasional discursions are made when a comparison with Roman history seems apt.

This is not a dry re-telling of history, but is a carefully crafted and delightful series of stories, that are well enough written that they bear listening to several times. One of the best Latin readers I have yet encountered.

Read in the restored classical pronunciation of Latin by Evan Millner. Recorded in November MMIX

Sonnenschein - 'Ora Maritima' - A Latin Story for Beginners 2010

Ora Maritima was re-recorded for this release in November 2009. Ora Maritima is a story in simple Latin written by Sonnenschein during the reign of Queen Victoria. It is set near Dover during the school holidays - and the students take a day hike to a location thought to be Caesar's landing place.

The books is a gentle introduction to ideas contained in Caesar's Gallic War, while providing a pleasant enough story in and of itself. Interestingly, a reference is made in the story to the 'Castle Line' - these were passenger ships that sailed between South Africa and Southampton in the days before air travel.

My grandparents travelled on one of their ships, the 'Union Castle' (Airliners have names, do you remember the name of a single airliner you ever travelled on? Ships are different aren't they?)

Appleton and Jones' 'Puer Romanus' - A Latin Story for Beginners 2009

Appleton's reader is suitable for a 21st century intermediate student of Latin, although even a beginner will benefit from extended oral input in the language.

The reader is in the form of a novella, told from the perspective of a young Brundisian boy, called Lucius. This books is justifiably famous - and remains one of a handful of such texts ever written.

Reynold - 'Nature Study Reader' and Novella. 2010
4 hours  38 minutes of audio
You would get the most out of this book if you had previously studied the Orbis Sensualium Pictus, as the first sections deal with science, the universe, nature, etc. The second part would be easier if you had listened to Taylor's adapted Caesar text, or Lowe's Caesar, if you are a complete beginner.

This reader is unique, in having as a strong focus indirect discourse - right from the beginning, Reynolds starts to introduce it, with imaginary students answering questions on the previous lesson. By the time you reach Caesar, the method of presenting reported speech seems natural.

This is a delightful audiobook. A beginning student, after studying Comenius, will be able to tackle the first half without problems, and after some preliminary study of Caesar, as suggested, the second half will also make for a pleasant experience.
The text can be found at archive.org if you search for 'Reynold's Latin Reader and Nature Study'

Sanford and Scott - A Latin Mythology and History Reader 2010

Sanford and Scott's reader would be accessible for a student who had completed the Adler course - re-telling famous stories from myth and legend, such as the story of Perseus,Hercules and Jason - followed by a simple Roman History reader. The stories are pleasant to listen to, and would benefit even a more advanced student. Listening to easy Latin is a great way to move towards fluency, which can only be achieved by extensive audio and oral exercise

                            INTRODUCTORY CLASSICAL AUDIOBOOKS (BLUE)

Cornelius Nepos - The Great Leaders - Student's Audio - Hamiltonian Text (2012)

Duration: 7 hours 40 minutes
Latin only - to be listened to along with the English pdf text.

The recording follows the Hamiltonian text, which is an English interlinear text, with the Latin word order slightly adjusted to make a running English translation comprehensible.

The Latin is still grammatical. If your intention is simply to be able to read Latin fluently, there is no problem with this methodology at all. If you intend to become a writer and speaker of Latin, then the less time you spend with the Hamiltonian text, the better - once you have used it to do its job, you should spend a lot of time with Cornelius Nepos' original text, until you have absorbed his unique style.

How to use this material:

Open the pdf to the appropriate chapter, and listen to the recording, while running your eye over the interlinear English translation.

Caesar - The British War. Customs of the Gauls (Hamiltonian Edition) 2011

This audiobook covers:

Caesar's Bello Gallico
Book 4, chapters 20 -38,
Book 5, Chapters 8 - 23,
Book 6, Chapters 12-19.

It covers the two invasions of Britain, and a section discussing the customs of the Gauls, which included the Britons.

The text is read phrase by phrase in Latin-English-Latin, with a literal translation that makes the Latin grammatical structures clear. Each chapter has its own bilingual audio file. The audiobook also contains separate readings in Latin only, in three audio files, one for each book. The original edition was by John Taylor, printers to University College, London.

Caesar - Book One of De Bello Gallico - The Helvetic War - Serial and Oral Method -  John Taylor (Publishers)  2011

The publishers to the new University College, London, in the mid 1800's embarked on a new series of Latin texts, following the plan outlined by the philosopher John Locke.

This particular edition of Caesar is unique, and no other Latin text has been issued since this date, using the serial and oral method. This method teaches grammar intuitively, through the deconstructed text of Caesar, which is built up line by line, each new line only introducing one new lexical item, or one new grammatical point, which is highlighted in the Latin and in the translation with italic font. This is a most valuable text for the beginning student of the Roman Classics.

                                            CLASSICAL LATIN AUDIOBOOKS (PURPLE)

Eutropii - Breviarium Historiae Romanae Liber I ad VI 2012

3 hours 24 minutes of audio
Books 1 to 6 - from the founding of Rome to the assassination of Julius Caesar.
For many centuries, this text was the first Classical work put into the hands of a beginning student of Latin, due to the clarity of Eutropius' style. It fell out of favour in the late 1900's.
Flavius Eutropius was a historian who lived in the late 4th century. He was secretary (magister memoriae) at Constantinople, and accompanied the Emperor Julian on his expedition against the Persians (363), and was alive during the reign of Valens (364–378), to whom he dedicates his Breviarium Historiae Romanae and where his history ends.
The Breviarium Historiae Romanae is a complete compendium, in ten books, of Roman history from the foundation of the city to the accession of Valens. It was compiled with considerable care from the best accessible authorities, and is written generally with impartiality, and in a clear and simple style.

Cornelii Nepotis - Vitae   (Lives) Chapters 1 to 14     3 hours 40 minutes of audio
This reading of Cornelius Nepos' "Lives" covers the first 14 biographies:
2 hours 43 minutes of audo

1. Miltiades.
2. Themistocles.
3. Aristides.
4. Pausanias.
5. Cimon.
6. Lysander.
7. Alcibiades.

9. Conon.
10. Dion.
11. Iphicrates.
12. Chabrias.
13. Timotheus.
14. Datames.

Nepos writes in a clear, simple Latin style that has much to recommend it. Catullus praises him highly. These works were written to be read aloud - as were all Roman works - and the authors were careful about how their phrases sounded. Nepos is a brilliant master of this art.
